"McCombie" is one of the main Sept Names of Clan
MacThomas.

McCombie is one
of a group of surnames that also includes Combe, Combie,
McComb and McCombe. It is likely that the origin of this group
of names stems from several migrants who left Glenshee to
settle in nearby counties, especially Aberdeenshire. The
likely explanation is that these migrants were the offspring
of McComie clansfolk of Glenshee who, on migrating elsewhere,
introduced "b" into their names.

There is no
firm indication that this occurred; however, in the absence of
contrary evidence, it can be assumed that anyone having one of
these names, wherever they may be today, came at some time
from Aberdeenshire. Within Scotland, in the middle of the 20th
century, some 60% of people with these names lived in
Aberdeenshire, with another 5% in nearby
counties.

Today, people
who have ancestors from Scotland who have these names, can
claim a link to the Clan.
