Scotland's Big 5                                                                                                    Back
As part of the year of Natural Scotland in 2013, the public were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite Scottish wild "animal". When the result was revealed the Golden Eagle had nearly twice as may votes as the runner up. Perhaps surprisingly the Scottish wildcat did not feature on the list - maybe this was because they are so difficult to see.

The results a show in the table below together with a link to a fact sheet for each of the top five.

1. The Golden Eagle  (38% of votes) - Gaelic: Iolair Bhuidhe. 

 

2. The Red Squirrel  (20%) - Gaelic: Feòrag Ruadh. 

 

3. The Otter (15%) - Gaelic: Dòbhran. 

 

4. The Red Deer (14%) - Gaelic: Fi Adh Ruadh.   

 

5. The Harbour Seal (6%) - Gaelic: Ròn Calaidh.

These factsheets are as relevant today as they were when the results were published a couple of years or so ago.

The Scottish Natural Heritage website suggests some reserves where it may be possible to see the big five responsibly - link. It is not clear how up to date this information is so it may be worth checking before travelling.
