thought of as a Welsh name, but there are some Scots called
Thomas, although not all will be MacThomases as Thomas is also
claimed by other clans.

The first Chief
to use this surname was Angus, the 10th Chief and he could
have used it in recognition of the Clan name MacThomas and/or
the style of the 9th Chief’s name Thomas of Forter and later
of Crandart.

Robert and the 12th Chief, David also used the surname Thomas.
The 13th Chief was born Henry Thomas but later took the name
Thoms.

meaning of Thomas is said to be “twin” but within the Clan its
likely to be a name variation of MacThomas.

The migration map
on this website shows the name Thomas moved south from
Glenshee, and probably then emigrated to other Scottish
counties from the late 17th century, especially to the eastern
Highland counties.

for a Thomas to claim a link to the Clan, it is important to
establish a connection to the eastern Highland
counties.
