Traditional Burns' Night Menu                                                                    Back

This is a typical menu for a traditional Burns' Night dinner:
Starters:

Traditional Scottish soups are popular on Burns Supper menus. They are simple,
warming and nourishing - a perfect antidote to a cold January evening.

          

COCK-A-LEEKIE

          

A delicious concoction of chicken and leek in stock, with rice or barley sometimes added for give a fuller texture. Traditional recipes also sometimes include prunes.

CULLEN SKINK

          

A delicious blend of smoked haddock, potatoes and onions, enriched with milk or cream accompanied by warm, fresh brown bread.

SCOTCH BROTH

          

Made from barley, stewing or braising lamb or beef, carrots, turnip, and red lentils or split peas. Chopped cabbage or leeks are sometimes added in at the final stage, to give a bit of crunch.

HAGGIS

          

The star turn at the Supper. Meaty, oaty, spicy and moist, haggis is a moreish winter warmer and works a treat served with mashed tatties (potatoes) and neeps (swedes). A dash of straight whisky may splashed over haggis – as the flavours of haggis and whisky really complement each other.

VEGETARIAN HAGGIS

          

Wonderful vegetarian version of haggis, made from fresh vegetables, pulses, oats, onions and seeds. This is Loved by both meat eaters and non-meat eaters - indeed  some people who have sampled veggie haggis will swear that it's tastier than the traditional version!

SCOTTISH STEAK PIE

          

Succulent slow cooked beef in a rich gravy, topped with flaky puff pastry and served with seasonal vegetables.

CRANACHAN

          


Tasted oats doused in whisky, and mixed through raspberries, honey and whipped cream served in a glass so that see the layers of ingredients can be seen.

CHEESE BOARD

          


Fine Scottish cheese such as Dunsyre Blue, Red Anster and Caboc served with rough oatcakes and homemade chutney. Some choose to have a dram with their cheese because some whiskies can really enhance the flavours of Scottish cheese.

A rich fruit pudding, containing sultanas, currants, raisins and dates served with cream or ice cream.
