We thought that
members travelling to Scotland for the first time to attend
the Clan Gathering might find it useful to have the words for
some traditional Scottish Songs. You never know - you might be
asked to sing them.
The Flower of Scotland
******
Scotland of
course forms part of the United Kingdom and the official
National Anthem for the whole of the UK (Great Britain and
Northern Ireland) is "God Save the Queen". However on some
sporting and other occasions "The Flower of Scotland" is sung
as an unofficial Anthem for Scotland.
*****
The Lyrics are as
follows:
******
O
flower of Scotland When will we see Your like
again That fought and died for Your wee bit hill and
glen And stood against him Proud Edward's army And
sent him homeward Tae think again ******
The hills
are bare now And autumn leaves lie thick and still O'er
land that is lost now Which those so dearly held And
stood against him Proud Edward's army And sent him
homeward Tae think again ******
Those
days are passed now And in the past they must remain But
we can still rise now And be the nation again And stood
against him Proud Edward's army And sent him
homeward Tae think again

Scotland the Brave
*****
It is
thought that the tune for Scotland the Brave first appeared
around the turn of the 20th century. The lyrics commonly sung
today were written in around 1950 by the Scottish journalist
Cliff Hanley. Other lyrics are also sung to the same
tune. The song was used to
represent Scotland in the Commonwealth Games until it was
replaced by Flower of Scotland from the 2010 games
onwards.
*****
Hark! When the night is
falling
Hear, Hear! the pipes are calling, Loudly
and proudly calling, down through the glen. There
where the hills are sleeping, Now feel the blood
a-leaping, High as the spirits of the old Highland
men.
*****
Chorus
***** Towering
in gallant fame, Scotland my mountain hame, High may
your proud standards gloriously wave, Land of my high
endeavour, Land of the shining river, Land of my heart
for ever, Scotland the brave.
*****
High in the misty Highlands, Out by the purple
islands, Brave are the hearts that beat beneath
Scottish skies. Wild are the winds to meet
you, Staunch are the friends that greet
you, Kind as the love that shines from fair maidens'
eyes.
*****
Chorus
*****
Far off in sunlit places, Sad are the Scottish
faces, Yearning to feel the kiss of sweet Scottish
rain. Where tropic skies are beaming, Love
sets the heart a-dreaming, Longing and dreaming for
the homeland again.
*****
Chorus
For the Sake of Auld Lang
Syne *****
The 2013 edition of the Clach Na
Coileach magazine featured an interesting article by Vice
President about the song "For the Sake of Auld Lang Syne" by
Robert Burns. We reproduce the words of the song
below:
*****
Should auld acquaintance be
forgot,
Robert Burns
And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be
forgot, And auld lang syne!
*****
Chorus
*****
For auld lang syne, my dear, For
auld lang syne, We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, For
auld lang syne!
*****
And surely ye’ll be your
pint-stowp! And surely I’ll be mine! And we’ll tak a cup
o’ kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
*****
Chorus
*****
We twa hae run about the
braes, And pou’d the gowans fine; But we’ve wander’d
monie a weary fit, Sin auld lang syne.
*****
Chorus
*****
We twa hae paidl’d in the
burn, Frae morning sun till dine; But seas between us
braid hae roar’d Sin auld lang syne.
*****
Chorus
*****
And there’s a hand, my trusty
fiere! And gie's a hand o’ thine! And we’ll tak a right
guid-willy waught, For auld lang syne.
