The town of
Pitlochry in Highland Perthshire lies on the banks of the
River Tummel and is surrounded by hills the highest of which,
Ben Vrackie, rises to 2,760 feet. Just upsteam is Loch
Faskally which was formed when Pitlochry Dam was built in the
late 1940's as part of the Tummel hydro-electric power scheme.
Much of architecture in the town dates back to Victorian
times.

The main A9 trunk
road to Inverness bypasses the town to the South. The main
railway connecting to the north of Scotland passes
through the town and much of the town's development was the
result of the arrival of the railway in 1863.
