Patrick Hunter Thoms was born
in 1796 and educated at Dundee Academy and St. Andrews
University. In his thirties, he became Town Chamberlain but
upon the death of his father in 1831, he resigned to take
control of the family's wide range of interests which included
insurance and property in Dundee at a time when the City was
expanding. He became a rich man.
In 1843, upon the death of his half-uncle, he became
15th Chief of Clan MacThomas. Soon after he purchased the
estate of Aberlemno between Forfar and Brechin and a year
later became Provost of Dundee, Deputy Lieutenant for
Forfarshire (now Angus) and a Justice of the Peace. Patrick
died aged 86 in 1882.
